CGC (CANINE GOOD CITIZEN) Testing

In recent years CGC testing has become mandatory for some apartment complexes to allow a dog to reside in their units.

We get many calls asking for testing but what some people don’t realize is that to pass their dog needs training in basic obedience and working around distractions such as other dogs, ambulatory devices, and strangers. It is necessary to be proactive about training to meet this criteria.

AKC’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program is one of the most rapidly growing programs in the American Kennel Club.

For dogs to pass the CGC test they need to be able to be able to hold still and not jump on or move towards a stranger who approaches the owner to talk. They need to be able to be petted, groomed, and checked by a stranger much like a veterinarian or groomer would without jumping up or being fearful or aggressive.

They need to walk on a loose leash, sit, down, stay, and come when called. They need to be able to walk well in a crowd of strangers, around ambulatory devices, other dogs, or children, and around strange novel noises or devices, as well as being left with a stranger for three minutes without panicking, barking, or whining for the owner.

As you can see, this takes training to accomplish. At K-9 Companions our basic Level 1 Obedience Course covers all of this and more.

Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. As you work with your dog to teach the CGC skills, you’ll discover the many benefits and joys of training your dog.

This training will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with. They respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs. They fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high-quality life.

We sincerely hope that CGC will be only a beginning for you and your dog and that after passing the CGC test, you’ll continue training in obedience, agility, tracking, or performance events.

AKC’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program

It is one of the most rapidly growing programs in the American Kennel Club. There are many exciting applications of this wonderful entry level training that go beyond the testing and certifying of dogs.

Many other countries (including England, Australia, Japan, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, and Finland) have developed CGC programs based on the AKC’s CGC Program. A CGC Neighborhood Model has been established, police and animal control agencies use CGC for dealing with dog problems in communities, some therapy dog groups use the CGC as a partial screening tool, and some 4-H groups around the country have been using the CGC as a beginning dog training program for children.

K-9 Companions offers CGC TESTING free of charge for all client dogs. For Service & Therapy Dog Certifications the CGC Test is a mandatory part of the process. The CGC Tests are offered quarterly and free of charge to K-9 Companions clients.
